OUR BEGINNINGS WERE HUMBLE
Welcome to India House!
From a small restaurant and imports store that opened in 1984, India House has grown to become one of Rochester’s most decorated and most frequented Indian establishments. The story of India House truly is an American dream come true story.
Om Sud was born in Pathankot, India. He came to the United States to attend graduate school at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and moved to Rochester after graduation in 1972. Om wanted the food he grew up with to be more accessible and he wanted to share it with others. When his brother, Chander, came to the United States, he showed an interest in opening an Indian restaurant, and that’s where the India House story began.

Om and Chander Sud partnered with Raj Chhibber to open the first India House restaurant on Park Avenue in Rochester. When Raj moved on, the brothers continued to grow the business, with the help of Chander’s wife, Shobha, and their brother and sister, Brij and Sudha. Chander, Shobha, and Sudha were the initial chefs and it was their recipes that formed the foundation for India House. Om and others worked full-time jobs as they grew the business.
Now, the restaurant has walls covered with awards from local publications touting India House as “‘Best Indian Cuisine.” India House today boasts five establishments across Rochester, Victor, and Webster. Beyond two full-service restaurants, India House also offers a banquet hall, food and imports store, and two express locations which focus on take-away meals.
The original restaurant’s decor brings to mind a dining room in a splendid home in India, but it’s the cuisine that causes customers to flock to India House. There, they can find an array of entrees and freshly baked bread from an authentic tandoor oven. The India House Food & Imports store also offers specialized groceries and gifts.
As the market for Indian establishments widened over the years, Om’s brothers and sisters opened new businesses, and Om’s son, Amit joined the India House management team. Amit opened India House Express in 2013, which helped broaden the restaurant’s audience. The future calls for expanding the India House Express concept and growing distribution of India House branded food and imported products. Throughout its growth, India House has remained connected to the Rochester community and is proud to have been one of the founding members of the Indian Community Center.
The mission statement of India House is “To make Indian cuisine a mainstream dining option and connect people with the Indian culture through authentic food, groceries and gifts.”
Mission accomplished.
